Robert Andrew
I began my creative life as a freelance illustrator after college, learning to build images through careful lines and quiet observation. Illustration taught me discipline, but it also revealed how much I longed for a space where imagination could stretch beyond the edges of the page.
Oil painting became that space. I’m drawn to the slow, patient nature of the medium — the way colour settles, blends, and deepens over time. Oils let me work intuitively, following small impulses or odd ideas wherever they lead. My paintings often carry a quirky, whimsical character, shaped by the subtle humour and eccentricities that slip into my process.
That same curiosity eventually led me toward kinetic sculpture. Working with movement opened a new world for me. Through found and recycled materials, I build pieces that twist, sway, or gently shift — works that feel alive in their own quiet way. Motion adds a layer of unpredictability I love, turning each sculpture into a playful experiment in balance, rhythm, and personality.
Across both painting and sculpture, my practice is guided by exploration. I follow the things that spark curiosity, the ideas that refuse to behave, and the joy of watching unexpected forms take shape.
