Tushka Illustrates (Chrissy Mouncey)

Screen prints & giglee prints

Tushka (Chrissy Mouncey) is an artist based in North Devon, whose work draws inspiration from the natural world. Since moving to Devon, Tushka has immersed herself in the beauty of her surroundings—capturing the ever-changing light, vibrant colours, and the dynamic forces of nature.

Her prints celebrate the awe and wonder of the great outdoors, exploring themes of beauty, movement and the calming effects of nature on the mind and improved well-being. Often featuring figures engaged in outdoor activities such as sea swimming or surfing, her work highlights the therapeutic relationship between humans and the natural environment.

Birds are a recurring motif in her prints, symbolising freedom and the uplifting qualities of the landscape, alongside a distinctive focus on light and its ability to transform the world around us.
Central to Tushka’s practice is a form of ‘gentle activism’, where she aims to highlight the significance of nature by amplifying its often-overlooked details.

Through her artwork, she seeks to preserve the positive sensations associated with spending time in nature—the quiet joy of being immersed in the outdoors, and the profound impact it can have on our well-being.

As she continues to evolve her practice, Tushka is exploring new ways to translate the emotional experience of light and water, using these visual triggers to create a heightened sense of presence and beauty.

She has begun experimenting with printing on glass, adding an innovative dimension that plays with light, shadow, and the delicate balance between permanence and fragility.

Tushka studied Fine Art and English before honing her screen printing skills through workshops at renowned print studios including East London Printmakers, Double Elephant in Exeter, and Spike Print Studio in Bristol.

She now works from her own studio in North Devon as well as continuing her practice at Double Elephant. Her work is exhibited locally, and she was recently shortlisted for the 2024 Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair.
