Open Garden

The garden started out as a featureless backyard, and is now a walled courtyard garden. In a mild maritime climate, it is also exceptionally sheltered from every direction except west, which made it possible to experiment with growing unusual plants that flourish in a mediterranean-type of environment. The plants include several large species of echium, together with acacias, ginger lilies, olive and agapanthus, and a large collection of cacti and succulents. These plants have the important advantage of being both water-wise and bee-friendly. The garden continues into a further walled corridor, and beyond that a ‘guerrilla’ garden occupying the roadside verge.
