Growing up on the wild North Devon coast, Ilfracombe has always been a part of me. However, it took moving to the other side of the world to realise just how deep my connection to our quirky town is. On my return, I started painting our gorgeous coastline and haven’t stopped yet. I use acrylic paint and apply it liberally with palette knives before working into areas with paint pens, adding detail with cross-hatching. I also incorporate texture and highlights by adding found elements such as small pieces of ocean plastic picked up from the beach, repurposed paper and card and old make-up. To my mind, there is nothing better than a seafront potter in Ilfracombe. I love seeing how it changes with different seasons and will paint en plain air or photograph views to work on in the studio depending on the ferocity of the weather and seagulls.
