Painting

My work explores landscape through ‘collecting’ mental prompts, written notes about the forms, colour and value and using memory which acts as a sort of distillation about the sense of a place I’ve experienced. I aim to capture the physical and mental feeling, reimagining the visual and those initial thoughts allowing me to paint in an abstracted form with a sense of freedom depicting something unique in character and immediacy. There are rarely set down sketches for a painting although certainly elements are used to ‘hang’ the rest of the thought processes from. It begins in a visceral and flowing sense which is intuitive and builds gradually into layers, making decisions as I paint.

I currently work in my own studio using either oils or acrylic and mixed media which allows different ways to work with each medium. Being so close to Exmoor and the coastline provides a constant source of light, shadow, weather and the expanse of the everchanging sky and land.
