Jane’s abstract mixed media works have evolved from a deep seated ideas led approach.

‘I see these pieces as part of the world. They are not an abstraction of something seen separate from them, but their content is an internal visual conversation.

Although there is a degree of planning in each work focusing on colour, texture and movement, there is also an essential random chance element which manifests itself as the creative process progresses. I like to tip the balance to create unexpected visual problems and outcomes.” The marks are a core communicative element; a signifier of her presence and decisions, with their shift, speed, pressure and visual temperature capturing a moment in time.

She often combines water based medium which has a vital expression in thinner densities with layers of oil based medium which remains lively when thickly applied.

Rather than seeing shapes as an outline to be filled in, she often allows the fluid consistency and colour value to lead the process and arrive at form.

Although not abstracted from the physical world her life lived always by the sea and its space, breadth and pulse informs her work.
